IDN Changes: Support for new languages and Reduction of the minimum label length

On May 31, 2016 at 20:00 UTC, .GLOBAL will support the following additional languages – French, Italian and Portuguese languages – and we will be reducing the minimum label length to 1 for all IDN´s.

Additional language support

From May 31, 2016 .GLOBAL will add support for French, Italian, and Portuguese languages, to bring the total number of languages supported to 25 languages.  With this, .GLOBAL will support all languages/scripts maintained by Afilias.

Please note that there is no Claims Period required with this launch.

Reduction in minimum label length

The present IDN policy set by .GLOBAL defines a minimum of 3 non-ASCII characters in order to be registered. From 31 May 2016 at 20:00 UTC, the minimum label length will be reduced to 1 for all .GLOBAL IDN´s.

This aligns the minimum label length for all languages supported by .GLOBAL to 1.

All one character IDNs for Danish, French, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Spanish, and Swedish languages have been added to the .GLOBAL Premium Namespace. For an updated list of .GLOBAL Reserved Names, please go to https://go.global/registrars/names-space/

All other one character IDN labels in the remaining supported languages can be registered as regular .GLOBAL labels.  Two character IDN labels are to be considered as regular .GLOBAL registrations if not listed in the .GLOBAL Premium Namespace and will be released on the same date.
